The dating app bio character limits below are the maximums each app accepts. The sweet spot column is our own recommendation, not an app rule.

The most generous limit of the three and the one you should use least of. Tinder profiles are skimmed at speed, so the bio has to land in its first line.
Bumble sits between the other two. The bio is read alongside your prompts, so it can carry the setup and let the prompts carry the jokes.
Hinge has no bio field in the usual sense. You answer three prompts, and each answer gets its own 150 characters, so the profile is three short pieces rather than one long one.

A character limit is not a word count, and the arithmetic catches people out in four predictable ways.
Rule 1
Every character in the field counts, including spaces, full stops, apostrophes and line breaks. The count is of characters, not words, so a bio of twenty short words can be longer than one of fifteen long ones.
Rule 2
Pressing return inserts a character like any other. A bio broken into five lines spends five characters on the breaks alone, which is rarely a problem but does explain small discrepancies when you paste text in.
Rule 3
Text fields on these apps count UTF-16 code units. Characters outside the basic set — which is most emoji — are stored as two units and therefore count as two. A flag or a skin-tone variant can count as four or more, because it is built from several joined characters.
Rule 4
If you paste text longer than the field allows, the extra is usually dropped at the cut-off rather than rejected with a warning. Read the last line back after pasting, since a bio can lose its final clause without any obvious sign.

One prompt answer, comfortably inside 150. Hinge answers that fill the limit usually contain a second sentence that should have been cut.
The limit tells you what the field accepts. It says nothing about what gets read. A 500-character Tinder bio is four or five sentences, and the fifth sentence is read by almost nobody, because the decision has already been made by then.
The useful way to think about it is that you are not filling a field, you are spending a budget. Each sentence has to earn its characters by adding something the reader could not have guessed. Most long bios are long because they list categories — travel, music, food, gym — and every one of those is true of thousands of other profiles on the same app.

Words like quite, really, probably, honestly and definitely rarely change the meaning and each one costs eight to ten characters. Removing them is usually the fastest way to get under a limit without losing anything.

On Bumble and Hinge you have more than one field. A bio that runs over is often carrying material that belongs in a prompt answer, where it will be read on its own and land better anyway.
